the reelfoward DOC ATLANTIC BREAKTHROUGH PROGRAM
The ReelForward DOC Atlantic Breakthrough Program, led by Lunenburg Doc Fest, will help emerging talent from the Indigenous, Black and/or People of Colour (IBPOC) communities develop documentary projects through mentorship, training, and introductions to key decision-makers in the film industry.
Comprehensive training will help four selected media creators from the Atlantic provinces who identify as IBPOC to develop, market and produce their documentary project over 12 months (July 2024 – June 2025). They will also have full access to the Dock Market at the 11th Lunenburg Doc Fest (September 18–22, 2024) and the Hot Docs Forum at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival (May 2025).
The ReelForward DOC Atlantic Breakthrough program began with a dynamic six-week online workshop series from July to September 2024. Participants explored the craft of authentic storytelling and interviewing while also gaining valuable industry insights. Sessions covered essential industry topics such as film festival navigation as a filmmaker, crew building, film financing, producing, and budgeting. Workshop instructors also provided crucial information on business and legal affairs, equipping participants with a well-rounded foundation for success in the film industry.
Having wrapped the workshop series, participants further received tailored feedback through one-on-one project sessions with seasoned pitch coaches. As the Program moves forward, the cohort will continue to engage in monthly group and individual mentorship sessions with the celebrated Canadian documentarian John Seongho Choi.
