Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Alan emigrated to South Africa where he lived for 18 years. He gained employment within the hydraulics industry and rose progressively through various managerial positions. At age 33, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer for the largest distributor of fluid power products in the country, participating in a management buy-out and subsequently the company’s IPO on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

In 1988 due to the country’s political instability and the threat to family safety, Alan, together with his family, decided to leave South Africa and emigrate to Canada.

Upon arrival in Canada at the age or 35, Alan settled in Oakville, Ontario where he continued to reside until 2016. He regained employment in a management capacity within the hydraulic industry, and during that time, Alan was appointed President of the Canadian Fluid Power Association, representing Canada at international industry conferences.

In 1995 he was appointed Canadian General Manager of a small USA owned, international manufacturer of hydraulics. Following the consistent growth in revenues and profitability, he was promoted to President and in 2003/4, he was assigned the additional responsibility of managing the company’s Australian operations.

In 2005 the company’s worldwide operations were acquired by a major competitor. During the following 11-years, Alan was assigned various responsibilities and during that time, successfully completed the MBA Executive Management program through Royal Roads University.

Upon retirement in 2016, Alan and his wife moved to Lunenburg County where their two daughters and their respective families live. Since arrival in Lunenburg, he has pursued his passion for road cycling, establishing an informal group of cyclists that he names the Cycling Friends of Lunenburg (CFL). He is also an active member of the Lunenburg Curling Club (LCC) during the winter months.

In October of 2019, Alan was invited to join the Board of The Lunenburg Doc Fest Association in the capacity of its Treasurer – a position he holds to this day. He is also treasurer for the Masters’ program of the LCC and is currently in discussion with the Bridgewater Foodbank for consideration of the same role.
